Color the Economic Concepts Contest

This program, co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, gives students in grades K-8 the opportunity to learn and demonstrate their knowledge of economic concepts in a creative and fun way!

Students design a poster of any of the economic concepts listed in the Virginia Standards of Learning. Selected concepts should be appropriate for the age level of the artist. Twelve state winners will each receive a $50 US Savings Bond and have their entries published on posters or in a calendar distributed across the Commonwealth.

Teachers: To qualify, postmark student entries by Wednesday, April 30, 2008. See sample topics and complete rules listed below.

Examples of appropriate K-5 SOL topics include the following:

  • Wants vs. needs
  • Money as a medium of exchange
  • Goods vs. services
  • Buyers and sellers
  • Choices
  • Scarcity
  • Natural, capital, and human resources
  • Specialization and interdependence
  • The role of technology with industry
  • Trade

Examples of appropriate 6-8 SOL topics include the following:

  • Taxes
  • Prices
  • Incentives
  • Supply and demand
  • Production and consumption
  • Free market, command, and mixed economies
  • Private property
  • Circular flow
  • Profit and competition
  • Spending, saving, investing, and borrowing
  • Public goods and services
  • Federal Reserve System

To Qualify
Entries must be a student’s original work and comply with the following rules:

  • Use 8 1/2 X 11 paper in horizontal format –leave a 1/2 inch margin around the paper.
  • Pictures should be in color with black lettering and all images outlined with a black felt tip marker.
  • The economic concept should be clearly written on the poster.
  • Concepts should be appropriate to grade level of artist.
  • Correct spelling only!
  • Do not fold entries
