| Ideas for Teaching K-5 Economics SOLs |

| This five session series will reinforce teachers' knowledge about elementary economics concepts and will particularly focus on the changes in the revised History and Social Science Standards of Learning for grades K-5. Teachers will receive ideas for hands-on teaching and links to children's literature. Teachers must commit to at least four of the sessions scheduled for Monday, January 25, February 8, 22, and March 8, and 22 from 4:15pm to 6:00pm. Registration is through the Arlington County Social Studies Office.

| Topics in Middle/High School Economics: Supply and Demand |

| During this session, we will define supply and demand through real world examples, examine the ways in which these two forces interact, and demonstrate ways in which this interaction helps determine prices in the market. We will explore supply schedules, demand schedules, market equlibrium, and how certain factors influence supply and demand and affect prices. Participants will receive classroom-ready lesson plans designed to introduce and reinforce these concepts.
This is one of a series of Topics sessions focused on economic concepts embedded in the newly revised middle and high school History & Social Science SOLs. |

| Fundamentals of Economics - Part A |

| Held in Spotsylvania, this is the first of a two part course that will provide an invaluable foundation for teachers new to teaching economics and/or personal finance. How well you understand the world around you depends on how well you understand basic economics. When understood and taught correctly, basic economic concepts empower people with “life skills” that enable them to make more meaningful and productive day to day decisions. This program will emphasize the “economic way of thinking” while covering topics such as opportunity cost, marginal analysis, production possibilities frontier, circular flow, types of economies, competitive markets, productivity, cost of production, supply and demand, product markets, labor markets, human capital,and entrepreneurship.

| This 6 day institute is designed for teachers who want to deepen their knowledge of personal finance topics. It will be particularly helpful for those teaching economics and personal finance. Detailed content instruction and methodology will be covered for most of the personal finance topics included in the new Economics & Personal Finance SOLs and competencies including banking, credit, consumer rights and responsibilities, insurance, taxes, and financial planning. Content instruction will be delivered by experts from the various fields. Participants will receive curricula for use in the classroom
